BLACK FILMMAKER RESIDENCY FOR SCREENWRITING

NOTE: Residency available only for Non-Memphis residents.

The Indie Memphis Black Filmmaker Residency for Screenwriting supported by the Remembering George Riley Fund is an opportunity for under-represented artists in filmmaking to develop bold storytelling and connect with fellow writers, artists, and other industry professionals in Memphis.

The residency supports one narrative feature film project deemed the most original, daring, intelligent, emotionally resonant, and realistic to produce. Previous residents have included filmmaker Raven Jackson for her project ALL DIRT ROADS TASTE OF SALT, selected by filmmaker Barry Jenkins, which premiered at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival.

Stay plugged in with our Indie Memphis newsletter and/or Black Creators Forum newsletter for news about 2024 applications.

2023 RESIDENCY RECIPIENT

In solidarity and consideration with the current WGA strike, the Residency and Fellowship will be divided in two parts, with peer-to-peer mentorship first, and industry advice taking place after the strike is resolved.

BETHIAEL ALEMAYOH (she/her/hers)

In 1993, a homesick young woman attempts to connect with her favorite Eritrean pop star when his tour comes to Dallas, TX.

  • Bethiael Alemayoh is an Eritrean & Ethiopian-American filmmaker based in NYC and Texas. Her work often follows young Black women in the midst of the little misfortunes that are causing big impacts on their psyche.

After interning for director Richard Linklater, she created and directed the short film series, We Are, which was distributed by Issa Rae Productions and has amassed 400k views and counting.

Her latest short film, Dressed, premiered at SXSW and her work has also screened at BlackStar Film Festival, Palm Springs International Film Festival, The Bullock State History Museum, and more. She is a recipient of the New York Women in Film and Television Scholarship.

Currently, she’s studying film at NYU's Tisch School of the Arts graduate program and working on her first feature.

“I DIDN’T FORGET YOU is an incredible slice of life with so much flavor. We loved the way the filmmaker uses celebrity culture as a way to parallel American otherness through the lens of the immigrant experience. Can’t wait to be at a major festival watching this in the near future.”
